Hemingway and the Ile Saint-Louis

The Ile Saint-Louis, sister island to Ile de la Cite, played an important role in Hemingway’s Paris years.

He writes about it in both The Sun Also Rises and A Moveable Feast—and he actually worked here as a a guest editor for Ford Maddox Ford’s transatlantic review when Ford went on a vacation. (This turned out to be a debacle for Ford who ended up closing the review six months after returning.) The transatlantic review shared an office with Bill Bird’s Three Mountain Press at 29 Quai D’anjou.

Hemingway would take manuscripts across the street to the river and read them, here’s a photo of where he might have sat and read pages from Gertrude Stein.
